Sam’s Place: A history of Support

Sam’s Place is a charity with a heartwarming story rooted in compassion, determination, and the desire to provide support. Although we now offer fantastic sessions in the heart of Blackpool, we have a history rooted in providing essential support and guidance to those in need.

Sam, the inspiration behind Sam's Place, was born with congenital CMV, a condition that left him with severe disabilities and complex medical needs. Despite the obstacles he faced, Sam had an adventurous spirit and a wonderful sense of humour. However, family outings and holidays proved to be challenging, as they required a careful balance between Sam's physical and medical requirements and the needs of the entire family.

It was during this time that Sam's family crossed paths with Dr. David Cooper, who had a vision for a family holiday centre in Blackpool and the Fylde coast. The connection with Dr. Cooper was established through Sam's time at Brian House Children's Hospice, where families, including Sam's, expressed a shared need for such a facility. This became the basis for the initial involvement of Sam's family with Dr. Cooper's vision.

As time went on and other facilities for families with special needs became available, Sam's Place began exploring ways to meet the needs of local young people who possessed a sense of adventure and a desire to learn new skills while being in the company of others facing similar challenges. After Sam's passing, the decision was made to honor his memory by naming the charity "Sam's Place."

In 2019, the charity's trustees became aware of a small group operating out of the Blackpool Carers Centre. This dedicated group provided essential support to young people aged 15+ with disabilities, learning disabilities, and autism. Recognising the importance of the work being done by this group and the potential for collaboration, the trustees from Sam's Place decided to visit and explore possibilities. It was a natural fit, and after funding at the Blackpool Carers Centre came to an end, Sam's Place stepped in to continue the invaluable project in partnership with their own trustees.

Then, in 2020, the world was struck by the devastating COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the challenges posed by the global health crisis, the dedicated staff at Sam's Place persevered, keeping the group running and even witnessing growth in numbers by conducting online sessions twice a week. The team went above and beyond by delivering activity packs for engaging craftalongs, ensuring members could still enjoy a sense of connection and creativity. Regular contact with families was maintained, prioritising their well-being and ensuring they were coping during these uncertain times.

As the world gradually returned to a sense of normality, Sam's Place found a new home. The organisation began running sessions from the downstairs room of Aiming Higher in Blackpool. This location, conveniently situated along a good bus route, ensured easy accessibility for all involved.
Throughout its history, Sam's Place has remained steadfast in its commitment to provide joy, support, and opportunities for young people facing disabilities and unique challenges. As the charity continues to grow and evolve, its legacy remains deeply rooted in the love and determination of Sam and his family, whose experiences paved the way for a nurturing haven that truly understands the importance of adventure, camaraderie, and learning.
